Symphony in a Cup

By Dhirann, Year 9

Oh, nectar of the gods             you humble yet divine brew.

Steamy and spiced, you warm both body and soul, too.

Your cup — a cradle of warmth in my hands, so true,

A gentle glow, like sunset’s hue.

How you cradle me in comfort when the world’s unkind.

A sip of you,                and peace I find.

Like a blazing fire on a cold, starless night.

You warm my heart                                  filling it with life.

What sorcery lies in your clove and cardamom kiss?

What magic brews in your cinnamon abyss?

You are sweeter than whispers on the morning breeze,

A liquid hug                 that puts my mind at ease.

Oh Chai, you are a symphony in every cup,

A reason to slow down                  to sit and sup.

Your aroma — a melody that lingers in the air,

Binding memories                              a bond beyond compare.

Forever cherished, my companion so true,

Life tastes better                 all because of you.

In your warmth, I savour life’s simple joys,

A burst of excitement                   as time decays.

Symphony in a Cup by Dhirann is an excerpt from Deadly Writing. Deadly Writing explores significant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices. Each week, students explore a range of texts crafted by First Nations artists and use them as inspiration for their own writing. They learn about Indigenous cultures and languages from diverse communities around Australia, and explore their own experiences and values as they write a series of short pieces of writing, producing a personal anthology. Students learn about and experiment with a variety of editing strategies as they prepare their own writing for publication. Deadly, unna?
