My Aura

By Nariman, Year 10

My aura to me is a shimmery, fluffy white colour, like a glistening pearl, tucked away in its clam.

Its inviting scents of elegance and luxury circulate through me, reflecting my personality; like the cherry blossoms that sway gratefully in the breeze.

My aura feels like the soft caress of a silk scarf against my skin. Cool yet warmly embracing, like the tender touch of a mother.

It’s the delicate tinkling of crystal wind chimes caught in the gentle wind. Each note a clear droplet of sound that dances in the air.

My Aura is an excerpt from Olfactory. Image shows the cover image of Olfactory, a yellow book with a drawing of a blue lynx can, a purple perfume bottle, and a light green nose.

This vignette, My Aura by Nariman, was created in Olfactory. Olfactory is a workshop series where students learn about features of discursive writing. They create a series of short responses or segments that will accumulate to become a personal essay about the olfactory world. Students survey their peers as to what is the most ‘puke-worthy’ smell. They develop their very own ‘personality perfume’. Students reflect on and share their personal connections to the world of smells, odours and fragrances. Lynx Africa, anyone? Student will learn about and employ such features as anecdotes, figurative language, factoids, allusion and anaphora. At the end of the program, students assemble a series of separate scenes and paragraphs to create a sustained piece of discursive writing in the form of a personal essay about fragrances, smell and odours.
