Chaos of Joy
By Muhammad, Year 7
Waking up to your cat sleeping next to you.
Getting money on celebrations like Eid and your birthday.
Eating ice-cream with friends and family,
playing games with your friends,
achieving a major goal in life
completing big tasks so after you can relax.
Watching a comedy movie with friends or family.
Watching something nostalgic.
Watching a series that continues a series you loved.
Going to late-night ice-cream with friends at 2am.
Fixing friendships with friends while trying to beat him in Dragon Ball Fighter,
landing a spirit bomb super attack on your friend.
Having a friendly game of cricket in your backyard.
Going real-mountain climbing that is dangerous with your dad.
When you get in trouble, bringing your friends down with you.
When playing Call of Duty or Fortnight with your friends and saying, ‘Time to lock in bro,’ and winning the game.
When all my friends play together we have a chaos of fun.
Playing in a handball tournament.
Playing hide and seek with all your friends and
the suspense
of footsteps near you,
your heart goes into a chaos
of beats
and the chaos of joy,
begins.
This poem, Chaos of Joy, by Muhammad, was written as part of a one-off poetry workshop run with the Australian Islamic College of Sydney. Students’ task was to write a poem inspired by Nikita Gill’s An Ounce of Joy.
