A Poltergeist is in Your House Tonight

By Freya, Year 9

The teacups rattled, a phantom breeze,

The portraits tilted, amongst the trees

Of wallpaper patterns, a silent fright,

A poltergeist is in your house tonight

The cutlery danced, a silver gleam,

A chilling draft, a waking dream,

The books all scattered, out of sight,

A poltergeist is in your house tonight

The mirror shatters, a sudden crack,

No turning back, no safe attack,

A restless spirit, burning bright,

A poltergeist is in your house tonight

The floorboards creaked with unseen tread,

A whispered name above your bed,

The lamp swung wildly, losing light,

A poltergeist is in your house tonight

This piece, A Poltergeist Is In Your House Tonight, by Freya, was written as a part of Ghost Stories. In this workshop series students are inspired by spooky texts from around the world and use their imagination to create their own take on ghost fiction. Over eight workshops students learn about the conventions of ghost fiction, engage in character and world building, and create poems and pieces of short fiction that evoke a pleasing terror in their readers.
