Short Online Workshops for Class Groups

Short Online Workshops for Class Groups

Story Factory, we’re experts in taking students through creative writing exercises – both in one-off workshops and in longer term- or even year-long workshop series. But did you know we can offer our workshops online?

We’ve developed fully adaptable programs for teachers to use in online learning (outlined below) whether you need a solution for the rest of this term, or for a couple of fun and engaging workshops.

DINOSCUSSIONS

Audience: Stage 2

Have you ever made friends with a dinosaur? No? Well then this workshop is for you. In these workshops students will create a dinosaur character, imagine meeting them, and help them solve an important problem. Each week students will complete a small ‘chapter’ of writing about their dinosaur, which can also act as a stand-alone or mini-story for students with inconsistent attendance. They will practice character creation, problem solving, and communication skills whilst engaging in a variety of vocabulary activities to boost their literacy. These activities will help students gain a greater understanding of syllable structure and how Latin/Greek root-words break down for vocabulary. This is a great workshop for students who are in need of extra assistance in recording and structuring their ideas.

OZ ODYSSEY

Audience: Stage 3

Oh no, I’m stuck on the other side of Australia! How do I get home? In these workshops students will explore geographical storytelling, character development, narrative obstacles and more as they tackle a classic adventure story. Students will compose a series of short chapters of this adventure story detailing obstacles that disrupt their journey and how they overcome these to continue on their path home. Students will engage with different Aboriginal peoples and will even get to meet the Ngalyod – an Indigenous Dreaming character. This workshop will provide plenty of structure and scaffolding for students with lower literacy, whilst still encouraging them to go wild with their creative ideas.

INSIDE OUTSIDE

Audience: Stage 4

Ever thought how the contents of a person’s bag or fridge – or even their body language – might help us to understand who they are?  In this modular workshop series students will have lots of fun opportunities to talk about and reflect on themselves and the world around them as they develop their skills in building character. Each week students will write short and achievable pieces of writing (think memes, thought bubbles, text messages, inner monologues) that capture their discussion, idea generating and sharing. This is the perfect workshop to inspire and engage students who are reluctant writers.

INSTAPOETRY

Audience: Stage 5

Instapoets (poets who publish their work on social media platforms) now have millions of followers and fans. In this modular workshop series students will explore the exploding genre of Instapoetry and learn how to use a rich selection of Instapoems to create their own anthology of multimodal texts. They will experiment with a range of short and achievable poetic forms and be inspired by Instapoets from diverse backgrounds and experiences to share and value their own voices. This is a terrific workshop for students new to Story Factory or for those who struggle to engage with poetry.
