Harmony In Diversity Day

Harmony In Diversity Day

11 Apr 2025

This week, Story Factory’s Community Engagement Manager Julie, Storyteller Chloe and Aboriginal Liaison Officer Bec went along to Rooty Hill High School for their Harmony in Diversity Day celebration along with the Mount Druitt Ethnic Communities Agencies (MECA).

In an exciting joint event, about 1250 students from the area, including young people from local primary schools, came together to celebrate diversity and harmony.

To celebrate the day, the students put on an amazing show, with music and cultural dress. They even had an opening ceremony with flag bearers dressed in their country’s national dress, and gave a number of cultural dance performances. To keep everyone fuelled up and energised, there were food trucks, and the students organised a number of great carnival games for everyone attending.

The Story Factory team set up in the youth services area, where many of the services that support young people in Mount Druitt held activities, and had great conversations with young people from the local area.

‘Our set-up for young people included a game of quoits, a short writing activity, and the creation of a sticker based on what they wrote.’ says Julie. ‘They got to keep the sticker, as well as put another copy on the amazing tree that Chloe had painted. With the stickers added, it looked like a (sort of) orange tree full of affirmations, memes and love.’

Throughout the day we spoke to a great number of young people who were interested in creative writing, gave out lots of flyers, and even had a couple of people interested in volunteering!

We love these kinds of events, where we get to be out in the local community, learning from and working with young people and having a great deal of fun while we’re at it! We can’t wait until next year’s event.
