Come join us on Saturday 17 September for our Pen to Paper Challenge Survival Salon.

We have a fun afternoon of activities planned for writers of all ages and aspirations, including panel discussions, open mic sessions where anyone can read their work, speed ‘dating’ with editors, and much much more.

Everyone who’s taking the Pen to Paper Challenge will want to come along to soak up some morale-boosting inspiration. 

And our Writers’ Survival Salon is open to all. This is a family-friendly event and kids are very welcome. If you’ve never visited the Sydney Story Factory before this is a great way to get a feel for what we’re about and what we do.

12noon    Doors open.
12.30pm – 1.00pm    Avril Tremayne In Conversation – Avril discusses the romance and rollercoasters of writing with editor Lex Hirst.
1.00pm – 1.15pm    Open Mic* – enjoy writers reading, be bold and read a piece of your own.
1.15pm – 2.15pm    Storytime with Aunty Uma* – get comfy as Aunty Uma reads aloud.
2.00pm – 2.45pm    Speed Advice from Editors – seize the chance to talk for eight precious minutes with a professional editor.
2.15pm – 3.00pm    Aboriginal Culture and Bush Tucker* – learn about culture and plants with SSF storyteller John Blair.
3.00pm – 3.45pm    Poetry Panel – poets Aden Rolfe, Yasmine Lewis, Hawraa Kash and Wallis Barth (11) talk poetry with SSF storyteller Bilal Hafda.
3.45pm – 4.00pm    Open Mic – enjoy writers reading, be bold and read a piece of your own.
4.00pm – 4.30pm    Speed Writing Competition – sharpen your pencils!
5.00pm – 5.45pm    Non-Fiction Panel – Amanda Hooton, Lucy Clark and Andrew P Street talk non-fiction with SSF co-founder Cath Keenan.
5.45pm – 6.00pm    Improv – Performers from Improv Theatre Sydney show just how much you can create from a simple suggestion.
6.00pm – 6.45pm    Speed Advice from Editors – seize the chance to talk for eight precious minutes with a professional editor.
7.00pm – 7.45pm    Fiction Panel – Fiona McFarlane, Debra Oswald, James Bradley and Briana Terman (15) talk fiction with SSF storyteller Matt Roden.
7.45pm – 8.00pm    Story Club – En Jenkins and Patrick Lenton from Story Club share their best tales of writing gone wrong.

* Young writers of all ages are welcome in all activities. These ones are especially recommended for kids.

All day:
•    Creative writing exercises for young and old.
•    Writing lounge – settle in and get some work done (BYO ear plugs and wifi hotspot).
•    Sustenance – tea, coffee and cookies all afternoon; wine and cheese in the evening. 
•    Compare notes and share writing survival stories with other writers.
