Soft Smiles
By Zuri, Year 7
When the sound of laughter reaches the air,
you forget your sadness and mistakes,
happily spending your time,
the feeling of your pens leaking through the pages,
pencils leaving a mark of art,
colours expressing your emotions,
leaving soft smiles to be seen,
clearing your mind from the disappointment you might have been through,
hearing the ball thudding on the ground,
bouncing through the court,
scoring with all your might
reaching rising heights.
Sports will always be a nice way,
to make your day come to light
and staying up all through the night,
sharing your happy thoughts or chats,
where your conversations grow longer,
and you can’t help but break a smile,
digging your hand into the soil and across,
grass rising above the sand,
gardening with small soft smiles,
joyful memories will always cheer me up when I’m down,
hoping they will last longer.
This poem, Soft Smile, by Zuri, was written as part of a one-off poetry workshop run with the Australian Islamic College of Sydney. Students’ task was to write a poem inspired by Nikita Gill’s An Ounce of Joy.
