A Day that Lasts Forever

By Yaseen, Year 7

Imagine coming home from a bad day
for your online mate to say, ‘Hey, let’s play.’

Game with your friend,
until your parents make an end,
then buy your favourite cake,
and give it to someone you hate.

Go out for a peaceful walk,
even if no-one talks.
Maybe even draw
It could be something that you bought.

Spread some kindness. Give a little wave.
Or just say, ‘Hey.’

Add some ice-cream to that cake of yours,
invite people to share some thoughts.
Maybe join a tournament
so you know people to torment.

It was such a good day,
everything going your way.
You know everything will change,
but currently everything’s in range.

This is a day that lasts forever.

This poem, A Day that Lasts Forever, by Yassin, was written as part of a one-off poetry workshop run with the Australian Islamic College of Sydney. Students’ task was to write a poem inspired by Nikita Gill’s An Ounce of Joy.
