A Wraith’s Lament: Prologue

By Victoria, Year 11

I was never one to revel in the gods – yet I find myself pleading to the heavens. Those omniscient beings indifferent to the suffering of man, their divine gaze fixed upon the grand tapestry of existence, unmoved by the intricacies of mortal plight. Yet here I stand in desperation, beseeching their mercy, hoping against reason for a benevolent intervention in this labyrinth of uncertainty.

For in my pursuit of truth, I have unknowingly forfeited my humanity, and am now a mere spectre haunting the corridors of justice, chasing a being that eludes my grasp with every fleeting moment. Hidden behind the facade of noble intent, I traverse the shadows, ensnared by the void within, yearning for redemption amidst the ethereal whispers of the enigma I pursue.

A ghost chase.

This piece is an excerpt from A Wraith’s Lament, a novella written by Victoria Weng in Story Factory’s Year of the Novella program. In this program, young people commit to attending workshops for a year and write their very own poetry collection, which is professionally edited, published and launched into the Sydney literary landscape.
